[The Ruth Group] California Secretary of State & Diebold Dear Friends It looks like Secretary of State Bruce McPherson must have already left for his holiday vacation...

[skimble] "Are we having democracy yet?": A different type of showdown is brewing in California, where Secretary of State Bruce McPherson says he might force makers of the machines to prove their systems can withstand attacks from a hacker. One such test on a Diebold system -- Diebold machines were blamed for voting disruptions in a 2004 California primary -- is planned.
[California Election Law] "Via computer, a vote-counting headache": Other states have similar rules, but Diebold had argued in court last week that North Carolina's law was too broad. The company said to comply, it would have to disclose proprietary code behind Microsoft Corp.'s Windows CE operating system, which is used in its machines.
[THE BRAD BLOG] 'IMMACULATE CERTIFICATION'! DIEBOLD ALLOWED IN NORTH CAROLINA AFTER ALL!: This is the same Diebold that three days ago said that they would have to pull out of consideration in the state because they were not willing to put their buggy software source code from their flawed Voting Machines into escrow claiming they had third-party software that could not be submitted to the state. This is the same Diebold that, as BRAD BLOG correctly surmised, were apparently making faux claims about their need to pull out of NC due to a court's refusal to allow them exemption from that state law.
[A Liberal Dose] Diebold Strongarms North Carolina into Illegal Certification... Baghdad Sniper Videotapes Kills: Raleigh, North Carolina - The North Carolina Board of Elections certified Diebold Election Systems to sell electronic voting equipment in the state yesterday, despite Diebold's repeated admission that it could not comply with North Carolina's tough election law. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) believes that this raises important questions about the Board of Elections' procedures as well as the integrity of Diebold's bid for certification.
[Issues In Focus] Electronic Voting Examined; Deadline Nears: The toughened requirements ” which include placing the machines' software code in escrow for examination in case of a problem ” have already led one top supplier, Diebold Inc., to say it may withdraw from the state, where about 20 counties use Diebold voting machines. Diebold executives said Wednesday they have not yet made a decision.
[==> The Truth About Political Stuff <==] Diebold faces e-voting machine hack test in California: The initial hacking was slated to be held yesterday but was postponed, said Jim March, an investigator at Black Box Voting Inc., a Renton, Wash.-based nonprofit voter advocacy group. His organization has been prodding California Secretary of State Bruce McPherson's office to test Diebold's AccuVote optical scan gear for alleged vulnerabilities.
[Chris's Rants] Are we having fun yet?: The state has been negotiating details with Finnish security expert Harri Hursti, who uncovered severe flaws in a Diebold system used in Leon County, Fla. (He demonstrated how vote results could be changed, then made screens flash 'Are we having fun yet?') Didn't Dubya tell Diebold that they were doing a heckovajob?
[Calelectionlaw.com] California Election Law: California Secretary of State Bruce McPherson invited hacker Harri Hursti earlier this month to test the security of a memory card produced by elections equipment manufacturer Diebold. The test, which will be in Sacramento but has yet to be scheduled, is a response to criticism the cards contain a security flaw that allows outsiders to access and manipulate ballots.
[Schneier.com] Schneier on Security: Leon County, FL Dumps Diebold Voting Machines: While this is not to say that Diebold machines were/are rigged, the apperance if electoral fairness is rather lacking when the guy who builds the voting machines has 'committed' himself to putting a specific candidate in office. The fact the American people did not run Diebold out of the voting machine business on a rail after that little misstep is of far more consequence to American democracy than the finer points of electoral technology.
[Calvoter.org] Kim Alexander's Weblog: It is further alleged that the Company's false and misleading statements served to conceal the dimensions and scope of internal problems at the Company, impacting product quality, strategic planning, forecasting and guidance and culminating in false representations of astonishingly low and incredibly inaccurate restructuring charges for the 2005 fiscal year, which grossly understated the true costs and problems defendants faced to restructure the Company. The complaint also alleges over $2.7 million of insider trading proceeds obtained by individual defendants during the Class Period.
