[What Future?] Google Talk has been both hyped (Google could kill AIM and MSN!) and panned (Google Talk has no features!). Right now there’s not a lot to Google Talk that any other IM service couldn’t offer, but here’s what has me excited:

Smash.] Google Talk and Open Standards: Anyone with a Gmail account can use the service, either with Google's Windows client, or any number of IM clients that support Jabber, popular ones being Gaim, iChat, Trillian Pro, and of course, Kopete. The buddy list on Google Talk is integrated with your Gmail contact list, so if you've actually been using your Gmail account, you might see a number of other users online right away.

What he got was a secure XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol, alternatively known as Jabber) server waiting for connections.
