Global Security Watch > Homosexual Student Expelled from Baptist College

http://www.acsblog.org [ ACSBlog: The Blog of the American Constitution Society] Jason Johnson, a Sophmore at the Baptist-affiliated University of the Cumberlands, was expelled from school last week after university administrators discovered Johnson's profile on Myspace.com in which he talked openly about being a homosexual. The 2005-06 University Handbook states, "Any student who engages in or promotes sexual behavior not consistent with Christian principles (including sex outside marriage and homosexuality) may be suspended or asked to withdraw from the University of the Cumberlands." Yet, when Johnson enrolled at the University in 2004 the handbook only prohibited "lewd and indecent conduct."

Boar's Head Tavern: Lexington Herald-Leader | 04/11/2006 | Reaction grows to gay student's expulsion Kentucky's largest Baptist college has its first big time culture war controversy. This seems to happen at some Kentucky Baptist Institution every so often. SBTS had a controversy several years ago. Same with Ky Baptist Homes For Children. (via Cosmos)

http://zoltara.livejournal.com  A Drunk Librarian Who Won't Shut Up: I am an alumna of Cumberland University, not Cumberland College (whose recent name change to "The University of the Cumberlands" helpfully eliminates confusion). People often think I went to Cumberland College/The University of the Cumberlands, and it irritates me--not that people get the two schools mixed up, but that two private colleges exist in such close proximity and they have such stupidly similar names. http://advanceindiana.blogspot.com [Advanceindiana.blogspot.com] Advance Indiana: Jason Johnson, 20, of Lexington, was asked to leave the small Baptist school earlier this week, said Larry Cockrum, director of media relations at the university. Johnson's dismissal came after he posted on his Web page at the popular Internet site MySpace.com that he was gay.

[Onlinegreensboro.com] MattHillNC.com: Christian schools like the University of Cumberlands are trying desperately to hide behind Scripture when, by taking a deeper look, all that they are doing is using their own prejudices and biased thinking to hurt other people. It is clear to so many people (and more and more every day) that discrimination against LGBT people is wrong.

[Lombardportland.com] Timbre of a TimeFree Mind: The university has a policy that says it reserves the right to expel a student who -- quote -- "promotes sexual behavior not consistent with Christian principles." The university would not comment specifically on Johnson's expulsion, but school president Jim Taylor says in a statement that the school is unapologetic about its Christian beliefs.

http://www.pamspaulding.com [Pamspaulding.com] Pam's House Blend: The "Ownership Society" term coined by Bush is just too scarily accurate, as it describes the days when those in society had ownership over the workers, whether they were outright slaves, sharecroppers, indentured servants, or today where they are minimum wage workers who haven't seen a raise since 1997 (40 hrs / week @ $5.15 / hr = $206.00 before taxes), workers with no union protection, and undocumented workers who can be paid a sub-minimum wage pittance and suffer gladly any abuse or maltreatment for fear of La Migra. Ah, those were the days and the Ownership Society can't wait to bring 'em back full force.
