Global Security Watch > UK Gun Crime - If the Police Are Getting Shot...

http://fabadger.blogspot.com [Flying Aqua Badger] Gun crime in Britain is by no means one of the more common crimes commited in the country. But after the events of Friday 18th November in Bradford where a WPC was fatally shot, even this small proportion of crime becomes the more concerning.

Purple Elephant's Corner: I’ve also been sheding a tear over PC Sharon Beshenivsky and the fact she was murdered on her kid’s 4th birthday which is tragic. What is also disturbing me about this case is the knee jerk reaction from the pubic that Police should be armed, I’m concerend that this policy would cause more tragedies than it prevents. http://leejones-san.blogspot.com  in vino veritas: I suppose Humphrys thinks that female officers should be kept in the safety of the police stations, doing desk work or filing their nails, whilst their more capable male colleagues go and do the dangerous work of real policing. Apart from being incredibly anachronistic, this line of reasoning also makes no sense: if anything mattered, it was the fact that both officers were probationers with less than 2 years' experience, rather than their sex. Someone Else's Life: Recent entries Someone Else's Life: Recent entries: Responsibility for Sharon Beshenivsky's death lies with the three armed thugs who were raiding a travel agents in Bradford, and who fired at Sharon and her colleague Teresa Milburn, 37 when they arrived to investigate. The two probationary police officers - Sharon joined the force just nine months ago, her colleague Teresa in April last year - were responding to a personal attack alarm sounded by a member of staff at the travel agents, which was popular with local muslims planning pilgrimage to Mecca. Blottered: Between 7,000 and 8,000 officers in England and Wales are already armed with 1 in 10 London Metropolitan police officers armed following the bombings in July. Most of those officers with weapons are part of special armed response units while the majority of British officers remain unarmed. (via Cosmos)

http://plumer.blogspot.com [Plumer.blogspot.com] Bradford Plumer: At any rate, these are badly disjointed thoughts, sorry, but I promised to say a bit about one of the most glaring and overlooked types of intelligence failure throughout U.S. history: namely, our poor ability to predict how other countries””or other people, period””will react to our actions abroad. Robert Jervis has written a few papers on this, but to put it another way, U.S. policymakers rarely seem to be able to figure out how other countries see the world, a blind spot which, during the Cold War, was more serious than the various mistaken analyses about missile gaps or mineshaft gaps or the like.
